Product Overview

Valproic Acid Description1-4

Valproic acid is an antiepileptic medication used in the treatment of partial and absence seizures. While it is most commonly prescribed for seizure disorders, data suggest that valproic acid may support hair growth in individuals with androgenetic alopecia. The effects of topical valproic acid on hair growth have been demonstrated in in vitro culture studies, animal models involving mice, and in a randomized controlled trial conducted in men with androgenetic alopecia. In that randomized controlled trial, valproic acid was associated with an increase in hair count in men with androgenetic alopecia.

Mechanism of Action1-4

The mechanism of how valproic acid stimulates hair growth is related to intracellular pathways and targets. Coordination of signaling between cells is important for formation and maintenance of the hair follicle. β-Catenin is critical for the development and growth of hair follicles through Wnt signaling. Without Wnt signals, β-catenin is phosphorylated by glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3 and then degraded. Inhibiting GSK-3 may enhance hair growth. Valproic acid may inhibit GSK-3 to facilitate hair growth.
