Sermorelin Description1-6

Sermorelin is a synthetic peptide analog of the body’s natural growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH), composed of the first 29 amino acids of the native 44–amino acid human GHRH. It is used as a diagnostic agent and as a growth hormone secretagogue to stimulate the pituitary gland’s endogenous production of human growth hormone (hGH). Sermorelin is most commonly administered by subcutaneous injection.

Mechanism of Action1-6

Sermorelin acts as an agonist at the GHRH receptor in the anterior pituitary, stimulating somatotroph cells to increase the synthesis and pulsatile release of endogenous growth hormone (GH). This in turn stimulates the liver to produce insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), which mediates many of the anabolic and metabolic effects associated with human growth hormone.

Unlike exogenous recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH), sermorelin stimulates physiologic GH production while preserving feedback regulation via somatostatin and IGF-1 pathways. This supports a more natural circadian rhythm of GH release.

Common1-6

  • Injection site reactions (pain, redness, swelling)
  • Facial flushing
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Sleep disturbances (insomnia or drowsiness)

Contraindications1-6

  • Hypersensitivity to sermorelin or any component of the formulation
  • Active malignancies, particularly those influenced by GH or IGF-1
  • Intracranial lesion
  • Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding (due to insufficient safety data)

Precautions1-6

  • Use with caution in patients with a history of cancer or intracranial lesions
  • May unmask latent diabetes mellitus due to its GH-stimulating properties
  • Store refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F); protect from light.
  • After reconstitution: Store refrigerated and discard remainder 28 days after mixing.
  • Do not freeze. Discard if solution becomes cloudy or discolored.
