Product Overview

Biotin Description 1,2,3

Biotin (vitamin B7) is a water-soluble vitamin that functions as a cofactor in numerous cellular reactions, including the metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Biotin also plays a role in gene expression and influences DNA-related processes, including fetal development and the regulation of synthesis and breakdown of fats, proteins, and sugars, in addition to its direct catalytic activity.

Biotin deficiency is uncommon in individuals consuming a balanced diet; however, when deficiency occurs, it may present with symptoms such as dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis, fungal infections, skin rashes, fine or brittle hair, and hair thinning or complete alopecia. Although true biotin deficiency is rare, available evidence indicates no associated harm with biotin supplementation.

Finasteride Description 4,5,6

Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that has demonstrated benefit in patients with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition commonly affecting men over the age of 50. Finasteride has also been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss).

Biotin Mechanism of Action1,2,3

Biotin serves as a coenzyme that binds directly to four enzymes that are responsible for the synthesis of macronutrients (fat, protein, sugar) and other molecules.  Biotin also regulates our genes by effecting the way in which our DNA is presented within cells (histone modification), this has been shown to influence immune function and fetal development.

Finasteride Mechanism of Action 4,5,6

Finasteride is an analog of testosterone that acts as a competitive, specific inhibitor of type II 5-alpha-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts testosterone to the potent androgen 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone. The type II 5-alpha-reductase isozyme is primarily found in prostate, seminal vesicles, epididymides, and hair follicles, as well as liver. Dihydrotestosterone has been shown to increase prostate growth and can lead to hair thinning. Finasteride has been shown to shrink the prostate to improve urinary flow and in the scalp lowers dihydrotestosterone to slow hair loss and promote regrowth.

Biotin Adverse Reactions1,2,3

Biotin Contraindications & Precautions1,2,3

Contraindications
