Understanding Compounding.
Compounded medications address situations where commercially available drugs don’t meet a patient’s specific needs, whether because of dosage, formulation, allergies, or other individual factors. Compounding allows for creation of customized medications under regulated conditions when prescribed by a licensed clinician.
Under U.S. law, compounded pharmacies fall under two distinct categories: 503A (traditional, patient-specific compounding pharmacies) and 503B (outsourcing facilities that may compound and distribute larger-batch medications).
WP Pharma Labs is a 503A compounding provider, meaning we specialize in preparing custom medications specifically for individual patients under valid prescriptions, aligned with regulatory and quality standards.
Feature / Regulatory Parameter | 503A Compounding Pharmacy | 503B Outsourcing Facility |
Prescription Requirement | Must compound only in response to a valid prescription for an identified individual patient. | May compound for bulk use, without individual prescriptions, supply to healthcare facilities is allowed. |
Regulatory Oversight | Regulated primarily by state boards of pharmacy; subject to USP standards (e.g. USP <795>/<797>) and state-level compounding law. | Federally regulated by the FDA as an outsourcing facility; must comply with full Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP, 21 CFR parts 210/211). |
Batch Size & Distribution | Compounds small, patient-specific batches; not permitted to distribute large quantities for general office stock or wholesale. | Permitted to produce larger-scale batches for distribution to clinics, hospitals, or providers for office use. |
Quality Standards & Testing | Subject to USP compounding standards and state regulations; environmental monitoring and standard compounding protocols required. | Required to follow rigorous cGMP standards, including validated processes, sterility (if relevant), stability testing, batch record-keeping, and enhanced environmental and quality controls. |
Beyond-Use Dating (BUD) | BUDs assigned based on compounding standards, stability data, or recognized literature, often more conservative due to personalized batches. | Potential for longer stability dating when products are validated and produced under cGMP, but must meet full manufacturing and testing standards. |
Use Case / Ideal For | Custom prescriptions tailored to individual patient needs, allergy exclusions, unique dosages, specialized formulations, complex or sensitive therapies. | Bulk sterile preparations, predictable demand, office-use medications for clinics, or when supplying larger-scale need beyond individual prescriptions. |
The 503A framework is designed to balance individualized patient care with regulatory compliance and safety oversight. For many patients, mass-manufactured medications are sufficient, but for those with unique clinical needs (e.g., dose adjustments, allergies, combination therapies, non-standard routes), compounding fills a critical gap.
At WP Pharma Labs, we believe in combining clinical customization with commitment to quality and compliance. Our 503A status allows us to focus on precision, safety, and patient-level care, rather than large-scale manufacturing.
Compliance & Safety Notice
Because compounded medications, whether from 503A or 503B facilities, are not reviewed or approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for general approval, the FDA does not independently verify their safety, effectiveness, or quality like it would for commercially approved drugs.
Use of compounded therapies should be limited to situations where a licensed prescriber determines that a patient’s clinical needs cannot be met by an FDA-approved drug. For every preparation, WP Pharma Labs requires a valid prescription and follows rigorous documentation, compounding, and quality-control procedures.
